Linen fabric appears in our homes more and more often, and not only in the form of linen curtains, tablecloths or tea towels. Due to the specific properties of linen, linen is once again finding its place in our wardrobes.
Below you will find some tips on how to take care of your linen clothes so that they last a really long time. The good news is that it doesn't need much care. Linen does not get dirty very much, even one of its properties is that it does not attract and absorb dust.
Still, sometimes you have to wash. If you don't have much time to devote to linen, it will be enough for you to switch on a gentle program, do not dry it too much and hang it on a hanger in the sun.
Washing- It is ideal to soak the fabric beforehand for at least half an hour (but not more than 12 hours) in soft water. In case of hard water, add a softener. Experienced housewives immediately reach for baking soda, the Yellow&Blue company has a special mixture called water softener .
- Wash in gel for colored clothes, without bleach. Soap gel , Jelen brand on our market, is the best, but ordinary gel for colored cotton clothes is also sufficient. Why not powder? It has anti-caking ingredients in it, which are not good for the flax fiber.
- Hand wash the clothes at 30°C, max 40°C. When hand washing, rinse thoroughly in cold water. Then squeeze out as much water as possible from it with your hands (don't wring it), use a terry towel to squeeze out the rest of the water, on which you lay out and shape the garment, and then start slowly rolling the towel with the product and squeezing the water into the towel with gentle pressures (you know from caring for woolen sweaters). Then unfold and shape the garment loosely on a dry towel and let it air dry in the shade. Finally, "lick" from the reverse side with a steamer to preserve the beautiful casual crinkle of the linen. The fabric will become more comfortable with each subsequent wash and wear.
Precipitation of flax
The higher the temperature, the more it just precipitates. Mechanical friction also has a great influence on precipitation. So, by combining washing in the washing machine, a temperature of 60°C and wringing, you will shrink the fabric by 4%-5%. By sprinkling and pressing while ironing, you can partially stretch the fabric again.
Production tries to reduce shrinkage as much as possible. By treatment, sanforization, it is sometimes possible to reduce shrinkage to almost zero (after the warp or after the weft, never all at once). The standard is 4%.
Unfortunately, the shrinkage values vary with each new collection order, so we recommend only washing on a gentle cycle to avoid unpleasant surprises.
Tip: Of course, wash bed linen and tablecloths in the washing machine, but separately so that the washed item has as much space as possible. Good experiences are when the fabric (bed linen) is folded into the washing machine (like into a closet). Diagonal fractures do not occur in this way. Spin as little as possible.
Ironing
Linen crumples, it is its basic property. It depends on your squeezability requirements. Most women nowadays avoid ironing. But those of you who like to iron, know that damp ironing can only smooth it almost flat. When using special preparations (starches) to strengthen fabrics (used for e.g. shirt collars), you can just iron completely...
In the case of bed linen, it is clear that after the first sleep it will only be wrinkled... so we also recommend just a light "licking" to soften it.
Tip: If you are not a fan of ironing, "lick" the garment from the reverse side with a steamer (2 point iron) to preserve the beautiful casual crease of the linen. Ironing just makes it softer.
